9. Estimating neighborhood traffic conditions using local biased measurements

Description :
This project aims at making use of the existing inductive loops and/or video cameras to monitor the traffic conditions at the neighborhood scale. Such detectors have often been installed very close to the intersections (e.g. stop-line detectors) for local traffic optimization. However, regulating traffic under severe congestion requires a large-scale approach, at the neighborhood scale. The objective of this project is to produce an accurate picture of the congestion conditions at the neighborhood scale using detectors that are mostly located near the intersections and hence very biased. The students should have a good knowledge of statistics and should be interested in traffic flow theory.
